Connecting Through YouTube

We all have used YouTube in some way. We have watched a video, posted a video, or shared a video. We use this site to connect with one another. In the video "An anthropological introduction to YouTube" they discuss how, we as people, are talking to everyone and no one at the same time.
Think about it, you sit in your room or studio and you are talking into a camera with no one around. It is just you and your web cam, but as soon as you upload it you are talking to someone. That is a very interesting concept. How can you be talking to no one, but still have an effect on millions of people?
I watch YouTube videos, mostly makeup videos, but I always feel like they are talking to me. It is like they are telling me about a new product or sharing a crazy experience, when in reality they are talking to no one. They have their subscribers who become a family, because they comment with each other and have conversations. One video can make people from all over the world become friends, but it can also make people enemies.
The video talked about the drama that goes on behind the scenes. I know in my makeup videos they are always saying how their is drama, and who annoyed who for more than five minutes in one video. The most upsetting drama, for anyone, is trying to decipher who is being real on YouTube and who is putting on an act to get views and subscribers. Nothing angers people more than finding out someone who they have connected with, and invested so much time in is a fake. An example they mentioned in the video was Lonleygirl15. People thought she was just a girl who was bored and had a web cam, when in reality she was not who she said she was. People were angered because they thought they had found someone they could relate to, when in reality the person they could relate to did not exist.
People had made videos to show their reaction when they found out that this account was fake. Then those people had followers and  subscribers who felt the same anger and pain. Those subscribers would leave comments and talk with others. They became friends over the fact that their favorite account was fake.
We use YouTube as a way to escape. We think we can be entertained, or we can entertain someone. All we are doing is creating our own world, a world where we are talking to no one but we know everyone is listening.
